Sedation Dentistry

Millions of Americans avoid going to the dentist for various reasons. Most of them are simply afraid. The dentist has had a long-held reputation for being a scary place to visit, and if you avoid regular dentist visits because of fright, you are definitely not alone. Sedation dentistry, however, is a very safe option to eliminate fear of the dentist and ensure that you obtain the proper dental care you need.

Severe fright and anxiety caused by visiting the dentist is a common occurrence. Sedation dentistry, however, uses FDA-approved medications to help curb that anxiety and make you feel relaxed and comfortable. There are a number of different types of sedation dentistry available for use, however nitrous oxide and oral sedation are the two most popular and most effective.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled in small amounts in order to relax the patient. The gas is inhaled through a mask and takes only a few short minutes to take effect and for you to be ready to receive whatever dental procedure necessary. Oral sedation is the type of sedation provided through a pill. Most often you will be given a pill to take the night before your visit, shortly before your visit and maybe during your visit. While you are under oral sedation, you will be responsive and awake during your visit, but it is unlikely you will be able to remember any of it. This is the same for nitrous oxide, although you will not be as responsive as you would under oral sedation. Regardless of the type of sedation used, you will need a friend or family member to drive you home after your appointment.

Sedation dentistry is a wonderful breakthrough in technology that allows those who are afraid of the dentist to obtain the crucial dental care that is necessary in order to maintain overall good health.
