Types of Sedation
Smile Makeover Specialist
Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry & TMJ offers two types of safe sedation dentistry methods: oral sedation and nitrous sedation. Oral sedation involves the ingestion of medication prior to your treatment. With nitrous sedation, patients are given nitrous oxide gas through inhalation.
Both of these methods are extremely effective for helping anxious patients undergo dental treatment in a state of relaxation. Sedation dentistry can be used for virtually any type of dental appointment, including check-ups/cleanings, smile makeovers, and neuromuscular dentistry evaluations or treatments.
Here is a little more information on the types of sedation offered at our Indiana cosmetic dentistry practice:
- Oral Sedation
As the name indicates, this type of sedation medication is taken by mouth. Also referred to as “conscious sedation,” the oral sedation method is easy, painless, and completely safe. If you choose oral sedation, you will be given a few pills to take at strategic times, usually a few hours before your appointment and at the time of your visit. With oral sedation, you will be in a highly relaxed state during your time in the chair. You will most likely find that you have little or no memory of the appointment, even though you were awake and responsive during treatment. You will need to bring a friend or family member with you to drive you home.
- Nitrous Sedation
Relaxation through nitrous sedation involves the inhalation of “laughing gas,” or nitrous oxide gas. At the start of your appointment, you will be given a special mask that administers the safe medication. Within minutes, you will be completely relaxed and ready to undergo treatment. There is a good chance you will not remember the events of the visit. Remember to have someone available to drive you home after your procedure.
If you have struggled with dental anxiety in the past and are searching for a way to conquer your fears, give sedation dentistry a try. You can start with a free, no-obligation consultation from one of our Las Vegas Institute (LVI)-trained dentists. During your initial consultation, your dentist will go over everything you need to know about the safety and effectiveness of sedation.
