The Causes of Stained Teeth

Finding the right solution for your stained teeth begins with understanding the causes of stained teeth. Here are some of the more common causes of stained teeth:

The first three causes create relatively superficial staining and often respond well to teeth whitening procedures, while the second three causes lead to deeper staining, and may require porcelain veneers or even dental crowns to achieve optimal results.

What Teeth Whitening Treats

Teeth whitening treats superficial tooth staining, the discoloration of your teeth that comes from outside sources, like staining foods and drinks. The most common foods and drinks responsible for staining are:

Smoking is also a common cause of stained teeth. It causes a distinct, easily detectible staining in the front teeth for many people. Even if you are not a smoker or do not consume a lot of staining foods and drinks, your teeth will just naturally stain over time.

Teeth whitening, which can be done in our office in an hour, or over time at your convenience with our custom-fitted take-home trays, breaks down the compounds that cause staining in your teeth. The result is a whiter, more youthful smile. The limits of teeth whitening are determined by the wear of your teeth, the natural shade of your enamel, and deeper staining.

Porcelain Veneers and Dental Crowns for Tooth Whitening

Some people have whiter, thicker tooth enamel than others. If your enamel is naturally less white, or if it is thin as a result of genetics or wear, you may not be able to achieve the level of whitening you desire.

If your tooth enamel is naturally less white than you desire, the solution may be to cover it with porcelain veneers, which can make your smile as white as you want it to be. After looking extensively at your smile pattern and consulting with you about your wishes, Dr. Deldar will recommend the number of porcelain veneers that will give you optimal results.

Although our tooth enamel is white, the material beneath it, known as dentin, is yellow, and as your enamel thins the yellowing dentin can show through. In this case, one or more dental crowns may be recommended as a protective measure for your teeth.

Some medications, such as antibiotics and fluorine overuse, can lead to staining deep in your teeth. This staining is generally resistant to teeth whitening and must often be concealed with porcelain veneers or dental crowns.

Another advantage of porcelain veneers is that they can simultaneously treat crooked teeth and chipped teeth while covering your stained teeth.
